The problem with having multiple contributors under one pseudonym is the confusing doctrine that entity throws up, often contradicting itself in most unusual ways.
Here’s a quote from a chookwatcher comment that demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of God’s Word.
Chookwatcher, responding to a commenter:
‘“And at every church service many give their lives to Christ.” – decisional regeneration is not biblical. Yes, people are saved despite Hillsong, praise God, but that’s a sovereign elective move of God.’
Did you get that? According to chookwatcher ‘decisional regeneration is not Biblical’. In other words, according to chookwatcher, no one can make a decision for Christ.
Therefore, all those altar calls where people have come to Christ are nullified by chookwatcher doctrine, and all those people who have been led to Christ one-on-one by their friends and relatives are not actually saved, according to chookwatcher.
What does the Bible actually say?
Romans 10:8-13 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Wow! This is salvation teaching 101.
‘If you believe in your heart, and confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus you will be saved.”
We believe with our heart. We confess with our lips. What do we confess? The Lord Jesus. How does this happen? Because we have heard and believed the gospel – the good news.
A person makes a decision to follow Christ by his or her own confession. This confession of faith is made as a result of hearing the gospel preached, believing in their heart and confessing Jesus as Lord.
What chookwatcher is saying is that s/he is expounding Reformed theology that says people are regenerated without faith, that is, God regenerates a person before they believe so that they can believe.
The clue is where s/he says that salvation is ‘a sovereign elective move of God’. In other words, God may save a person completely against their will, not save a person who wills to be saved simply because it is His elective will and nothing to do with the will of the person being saved. Reformed theology, and quite unbiblical.
What does scripture say, then?
Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
We are saved by grace through faith. We are not saved by grace without faith. Faith entered because we heard the Word preached and then we were in a position to receive the grace that was offered for eternal life.
The quote above from Romans 10 references Deuteronomy 30, where God asks the questions Paul puts to the Romans, ‘But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”, which is directly from the Deuteronomy 30 passage, which continues:
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him…”
What does God say to His people? “Choose life!” Choose. Life. In other words, Paul is quoting from a passage which includes choice about life and death, blessing and cursing.
He says that when the gospel is preached and we believe it we have a choice. We can select life or death. We can recieve the free gift of eternal life when we confess with our lips what we know to be true in our hearts – that Jesus, who died for us, was buried for us, and was raised so that we could be saved and given eternal life in Him – is our Lord.
There is no way that so called ‘decisional regeneration’ is unbiblical. Chookwatcher teaches incorrect doctrine.
Repentance is a decision and a choice
When Peter preached on the Day of Pentecost many thousands were saved on that day. They wanted to know what they should do after they’d heard the gospel and believed.
Acts 2:37-39 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
They were to repent and be baptised. Repentance is a change of heart that leads to a change of decision. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ. No one is saved without the gospel being preached.
Peter and John, preaching at Solomon’s Portico, called on the people to repent – in other words, they had a choice about the change that was being offered of life or death, blessing or cursing.
Acts 3:19-21 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.
There is much more in this. Philip preached in Samaria and thousands made decisions for Christ. People are saved – regenerated, born again, converted – because they hear and believe the good news of Jesus Christ who paid the price of their sin and offers eternal life through faith in Him – decisional regeneration.
Don’t listen to the chookwatchers. They are not teaching sound doctrine.
